How to choose the right type of touchscreen technology


Our collective familiarity with touchscreen technology has been ubiquitous since smartphones first appeared more than a decade ago. Virtually everyone in society - from young to old - can intuitively use touchscreens in a variety of product mediums. Whether it's smart devices or self-checkout kiosks, touchscreen technology touches every aspect of our lives.


However, most people are unaware that there are different types of touchscreen technologies that differ significantly in design, construction, and purpose.


Projected Capacitive Touch Panel Technology (PCAP)


Compared to resistive touch, (projected) capacitive touch works without any pressure. Just a light touch. This technique uses only glass plates. It has a transparent conductive layer on the back. Projected capacitive technology (PCAP) also requires two metal layers that are insulated from each other. The surface is divided into grids and the current capacity of each area is permanently monitored.




An alternating current is applied to this, thereby generating an electric field. As the finger approaches the surface, the capacitance of the individual ITO tracks changes. This measures and determines the exact location.


Since this conductive foil is attached to the interior of the monolithic structure, it operates on a virtually wear-free and transparent glass surface. However, this technology can only be operated with very thin gloves or special conductive styluses other than fingers.
