Types of Optical Bonding

Liquid Optical Clear Adhesive

LOCA is used in an optical bonding process where the air gap between the touch display and the cover plate is filled. This adhesive cures using UV light rather than heat. This edge-to-edge bonding process improves visibility, touch sensitivity and readability in sunlight. It improves the durability of the display and prevents moisture from accumulating between the touch panel and the cover.

Optically Clear Adhesives

OCA is applied using a process similar to film lamination. Unlike LOCA, OCA is an adhesive sheet placed between the touch panel and the cover. This adhesive is cured in an autoclave using pressure and heat. This method allows for thinner bond lines, ideal for thinner, more compact applications.

Air bonding

The process of applying tape to the edge of the touch panel so that the cover can be glued to the monitor. This process leaves an air gap between the touch panel and the display cover. This process increases glare and reflections, while also making the display susceptible to moisture and impact damage.

Hybrid bonding

Combination of LOCA and OCA optical bonding. Liquid optically clear adhesive is dispensed onto the touch sensor, then the touch sensor and display are sealed together in a vacuum chamber, and the entire display is cured under UV light. This optical bonding method offers the same benefits, but only for certain display applications.
