In physical structure, IIC system consists of a serial data line SDA and a serial clock line SCL. The host addresses and transmits information to the slave according to certain communication protocol. During data transmission, the host initiates a data transmission. The host transmits the data on the SDA line and the clock on the SCL line. The object and direction of information transmission and the start and end of information transmission are determined by the host.
Each device has a unique address, and can be a single receiving device (e.g., LCD driver) or a device that can receive or send (e.g., memory). The transmitter or receiver can operate in master mode or slave mode, depending on whether the chip must initiate data transmission or only be addressed.
1. Validity of data on the bus
IIC bus transmits data in serial mode, starting from the highest bit of data byte. Each data bit has a clock pulse corresponding to it on the SCL. During the high level of clock line, the data line must maintain a stable logic level state. The high level is data 1, and the low level is data 0. Only when the clock line is low, can the level state of the data line change.
2. Signals on the bus
IIC bus has four types of signals in the process of data transmission: start signal, stop signal, restart signal and reply signal.
Start signal: when SCL is high, SDA will jump from high level to low level to generate start signal. When the bus is idle, for example, no active device is using the bus (SDA and SCL are at high level), the host establishes communication by sending a start signal.
Stop signal: when the SCL is high power level, SDA will jump from low level to high level to generate stop signal. The host sends a stop signal to end data communication.
Repeated start: on the IIC bus, after the host sends a start signal to start a communication, before the first stop signal is sent, the host can convert the communication mode with the current slave or switch to another slave by sending a restart signal. As shown in Figure 11-3, when the SCL is high, the SDA will jump from high level to low level to generate a restart signal. Its essence is a start signal.
Answer signal (a): a specific low-level pulse sent by the IC receiving data to the IC sending data after receiving 8-bit data. Each data byte shall be followed by a bit response signal to indicate that data has been received. When the answer signal appears in the 9th clock cycle, the transmitter must release the data line on this clock bit. The receiving device pulls the low SDA level to generate the answer signal, and the receiving device keeps the high SDA level to generate the non answer signal (a (-)). Therefore, a complete byte data transmission needs 9 clock pulses. If the slave sends the non answer signal to the host as the receiver, the host side will consider the data transmission failure; if the host as the receiver sends the non answer signal after the slave transmitter sends a byte of data, the slave will consider the data transmission bundle and release the SDA line. In either case, the data transmission will be terminated. At this time, the host either generates a stop signal to release the bus, or generates a restart signal to start a new communication. The start signal, restart signal and stop signal are all generated by the main controller, and the response signal is generated by the receiver. The devices with IIC bus interface on the bus can easily detect these signals.
3. Data transmission format on the bus.Generally, a standard IIC communication consists of four parts: start signal, slave address transmission, data transmission and stop signal.
The host sends a start signal to start IIC communication; after the host addresses the slave, it transmits data on the bus. Each byte transmitted on IIC bus is 8 bits. The first data bit transmitted is the highest bit. Each byte transmitted must be followed by a response bit. The number of data bytes for each communication is unlimited. After all data transmission is completed, the host sends a stop signal to end the communication.
When the clock line is low power, data transmission will stop. This kind of situation can be used to force the bus to enter the waiting state when the receiver cannot receive the next data immediately after receiving a byte of data, until the receiver is ready to receive new data, the receiver releases the clock line so that the data transmission can continue normally. For example, when the receiver receives a byte of data from the main controller, it generates an interrupt signal and performs an interrupt processing. Only after the interrupt processing is completed can it receive the next byte of data. At this time, the receiver will clamp the SCL to the low level during the interrupt processing, and release the SCL until the interrupt processing is completed.
4. IIC bus addressing protocol
In order to eliminate the address selection line between the main controller and the controlled device in the IIC bus system and simplify the bus connection line to the maximum extent, the IIC bus adopts a unique addressing convention, which specifies that the first byte after the start signal is the addressing byte, which is used to address the controlled device and specify the direction of data transmission.
